The challenge
A new build on the AELTC estate delivered under Willmott Dixon with NG Bailey as the electrical contractor. The building is steel framed, which gives a ready made path to ground, but the roof network could only go in once the roofers had finished, and the frame had to be bonded at both ground and roof level before those areas were closed up. The sequence of visits had to fit around other trades on a busy site, from a February 2021 start.
What we did
- Prepared a site specific RAMS and method statement for a two man crew working from the main contractor's scaffold, with the structural frame used as the down conductor section of the system.
- Bonded the steel frame at 20 m centres around the perimeter at ground level and at roof level. At each point we drilled a 10 mm hole in the steelwork, fitted an M10 bonding clamp and left a 25 x 3 mm aluminium tape tail. The high level tails were rolled up for the roofing contractor to bring out through the finished roof.
- Returned after the roof was clipped out to install the 25 x 3 mm PVC coated aluminium air termination network, connecting each frame tail into it.
- Bonded all exposed extraneous metalwork on the roof, including plant, flues, handrails and aerials, into the air termination network with purpose made M10 bonding clamps.
- Connected the low level frame tails to the earthing tails already installed at the base of the structure, then tested the completed system.
Outcome
A Level IV type system delivered with the steel frame doing the work of the down conductors, so no external down tapes on the elevations. The system was tested on completion and certificated.
