A tight central London site at King's Cross with a tower crane that needed an independent earth, followed by the earth termination network for the building's lightning protection system. Underground services are dense in this part of Bloomsbury, so every rod position had to be surveyed and agreed before anything was driven. The work started in the week of 19 April 2021 under full Covid site controls, with staggered access slots and two metre working.

  • Prepared the RAMS for a two man crew covering earth electrode installation, scaffold access, percussion tool use and the site's Covid procedures.
  • Obtained the underground services drawing from the main contractor and swept every proposed electrode position with a calibrated CAT and Genny before driving. No electrode went in without the main contractor agreeing its final location.
  • Drove the earth electrodes to an initial depth of 6 m using a 110 V hand held percussion hammer, sharing the work between operatives and logging trigger time to control hand arm vibration exposure.
  • Connected the electrodes to the structural steel frame, so the frame and the earth work together as the building's path to ground, and provided the crane earth as a separate connection.
  • Tested each electrode for earth resistance with a calibrated digital earth tester on completion and recorded the readings.

A tested crane earth and earth termination network installed to BS EN 62305 and BS 7430 on a constrained central London site, with the building's lightning protection system completed and tested to the specification.
